System Requirements

AutoMKV, being a digital video processing suite, has fairly high system requirements for optimal performance, but is created so even lower-end systems can use it.

Recommended System:

  • 2.0Ghz or faster processor.
  • 1GB of RAM.
  • 18GB of free hard disk space for working room. Actual usage will vary based on encoder settings and length of project.
  • A DVD drive with a read speed of 12x or more.

New Installations

AutoMKV itself

Installing AutoMKV on your system is easy, as it includes almost all the components you would need within it's own package. It is recommended you dearchive AutoMKV into a folder of its own, not loose into another folder of files, or on the root level of a drive. Also, due to limitations in how long a DOS command string can be, do not place the folder deep in many nested folders (like your "My Documents" folder). Instead, keeping this folder on the root level of your hard drive or within a level or two of it is best.

You will still need to install a few separate software packages to gain full access to all AutoMKV's features, these packages are not all necessarily required, but it is recommended you install them even if you have no immediate plans to use them, this will prevent issues later if you decide to explore more after you have the gist of working with AutoMKV down, but forgot you had not installed necessary extra software.

NeroAAC

If you wish to use NeroAAC for audio encoding, you will need to download the encoder component from Nero Digital at this page. Unzip the archive your download and in the Win32 folder, take the file "NeroAacEnc.exe" and place it into \exe\besweet folder within your AutoMKV folder. Note: If you have a SSE2 capable processor, you may use the "NeroAacEnc_SSE2.exe", just rename it to "NeroAacEnc.exe" after you copy it to AutoMKV 's files, as this is the filename AutoMKV will be looking for to invoke it.

Note for AMD users: Version 1.1.34.2 of NeroAAC uses intel compiler and the neroaacenc_sse.exe is not compatible with any AMD processors whether they support SSE or not.

If you run AutoMKV without the required file, it will alert you on launch and offer to take you to the above mentioned webpage to get the encoder. You may choose "No" to dismiss the dialog and continue working without NeroAAC encoding available. If you do not wish to ever use NeroAAC, create a file named "noneroAacEnc.here" in the \exe\besweet folder and AutoMKV will cease to display the warning.

AVISynth

You will also need to install AVISynth version 2.5.7 or higher. You can obtain it from this direct link to sourceforge.

XviD

An installation of the Koepi Build of XviD is needed and can be obtained from this site. Here is the direct link. This is required for the YV12 decoder.

WVC1

If you wish to encode in Windows Media formats you will need several software additions.

  • The Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, which can be downloaded here.
  • Windows Media Player 11, which you can download here for WinXP.
  • If you are unable to install Windows Media Player 11, you can install the WMFdist11, which includes all the needed files. There is a mirror here.
  • Vista User: must disable DEP. Look here.

For 5.1 Audio look here. You can use FFDShow or AC3Filter

It is recommended you install wmvencoder (series 9) before you install Windows Media Player 11.

FFdshow

FFdshow as decoder (read this if you have audio extraction problems: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=113811&page=112) Download: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow_beta3_rev1324_20070701_clsid.exe?modtime=1183396865&big_mirror=0

That is all. Assuming you have some source material, you are ready to begin using AutoMKV.
You may wish to peruse the full manual now.

Updating Existing Installations

Many of AutoMKV's releases are updates to the core executable only. To update, simply download the EXE and put it into AutoMKV's folder in place of the previous version. At times when other components are updated as part of an update, buzzqw will provide instructions on where to place files/what to replace in the applicable forum post where he announces the new version and changelog for that update.

Updating to New Full Packages

When a new, full package of AutoMKV is released, many times certain individual components are changed. Because of this, you should dearchive the new AutoMKV into a separate folder (not on top of the existing install) and use it instead of the old one. Files like NeroAacEnc.exe that were manually added as part of your original installation will need to be moved/copied to the new AutoMKV install, as will any special AVISynth filters you added or other files you have replaced in your own tweaking of the program. Just like when you check around your seat for belongings before you get off an airplane, remember to remove any of your project files from the old AutoMKV's folder before you delete the directory. Otherwise you may inadvertently lose work.

Uninstalling

While we can't see why anyone would want to uninstall AutoMKV and stop using it, occassionally you might wish to completely uninstall and reinstall it when troubleshooting any problems you encounter. As AutoMKV doesn't write to the registry, it is a simple matter of deleting the directory you originally uncompressd AutoMKV into, then deleting the below dll files which AutoMKV may have copied to your \windows\system32 directory. As some of these dll files may also be used by other software on your system, you may wish to make a backup copy of them first.

  • fftw3.dll
  • libsndfile-1.dll
  • FFMpegSource.dll
  • avcodec-51.dll
  • avformat-51.dll
  • avutil-49.dll
  • libFLAC_dynamic.dll
  • postproc-51.dll
  • swscale-0.dll
  • zlib1.dll

If you have installed any of the separate optional software packages, you should refer to their documentation or websites for specific uninstallation instructions.

Advanced Performance Tweaks

See also Advanced Multi-threading (unstable).

oggenc

As of the AutoMKV 0.81 package release, the version of oggenc is v2.8.3 Lancer - SSE version (based on aoTuV b5). You can use this build if you have SSE3MT support, which would include multi-thread capable processors Athlon64X2, Pentium D, Core Duo(Dual), or Core2 Duo (Conroe & Merom core). Other versions of oggenc are available here. If you lose track of your original files this is the build used.

RemoveGrain

In the AutoMKV 0.80 package release, the filter RemoveGrain.dll was replaced with RemoveGrainS.dll for better compatibility for Athlon processors. But if you have a more powerful CPU, you can replace this file with the one from this package. Take the DLL version your CPU supports (RemoveGrainSSE2.dll or RemoveGrainSSE3.dll). You can do the same thing with with the RepairS.dll from AutoMKV.
